In early fifties many families were hesitant to send their young daughters to co-educational colleges. So a girls section of D.A.V. college was started in 1952 in a small bunglow called Green House in Civil Lines with an enrolment of 20 students and 6 teachers to teach them. The numbers kept swelling and crossed 200 in 1959.It was then that efforts were made to seek affiliation from Agra Univesity for this girl section as an independent college. Thus the first PG Women’s College of the town came into being in July 1959 with nine subjects of which only 4 were taught at PG level ,12 teachers , 2 librarians and 2 support staff . It was a small, shaky beginning but with god’s grace and untiring efforts of our founder Principal Late Smt. Indra Varma gradually new programmes and subjects were introduced. Smt.Indra Varma nurtured this college and guided its growth with single minded devotion and commitment. In 1960 Philosophy and Urdu were introduced at Under Graduate level and Psychology was introduced at Post Graduate level. In the year 1966 Geography and Sociology too acquired PG status. PG in science subject like Zoology, Botany, Chemistry was started in 1966. By 1970 B.Ed too was introduced and till date remains one of our most popular programmes. In the last 20 years under the stewardship of Dr.Nagendra Swarup the college has made tremendous progress in all directions.Dr.Swarup is a great advocate of New Education Policy and firmly believes that the system of higher education must be strengthened and diversified so that it is able to meet the changing requirement of manpower in a global economy. In recent times we have introduced many demand based, job oriented and interdisciplinary courses like Home Science, Microbiology, Information Technology, Biotechnology, Library & Information Science. At present the college is running 48 academic programmes at UG and PG level. We have a teaching staff of 150 of which 94 teachres are Ph.D., 4 are M.Phil. and 29 NET qualified. The College has a support staff of 175 comprising clerks, lab- technician and library staff . Currently the student strength has crossed 8000. We have been striving to cope with challenges that higher education is facing today. With our emphasis on research oriented education and greater job orientation of our academic programmes, we are sure to go a long way.
